What is Reiki?
Reiki is a technique that soothes, relaxes, and restores balance and harmony in body and mind of the recipient. It also promotes healing. Reiki never causes harm, it flows where it is needed, and it is considered a complementary modality belonging to the emerging field of energy medicine.
All Animals Love Reiki
Giving a Reiki treatment involves the practitioner putting his or her hands lightly on or near the animal's body while the practitioner enters a state of meditative focus. Different hand positions are used, depending on the condition being treated. Often the animal will enter a state of deep relaxation or sleep. Animals love Reiki. They seem intuitively to understand its power to heal. During a session, the pet's heart rate becomes regular, even when they were stressed out only a moment before. The breathing changes to deep and rhythmic, and it is a very peaceful experience for animal and practitioner alike.
All Animals Can Benefit from Reiki
All animals, whether shelter dogs or dogs in happy homes, cats, birds, small animals, or large and farm animals can benefit from the healing aspects of Reiki. For healthy animals, Reiki can help maintain energetic balance and promote health and well-being. For animals suffering from illness or injury, either physical or mental, Reiki is a powerful complement to both conventional and alternative healing methods. For dying animals, Reiki gives them gentle, loving support in this process. For a person who has a pet, works with animals, or volunteers at a shelter, Reiki is a wonderful healing tool to be able to offer to your animal friends. About Sabine
I have been practicing and teaching Reiki since 1997, and I have been living with animals all my life. My Reiki involvement started with giving sessions to friends and family, and later teaching Reiki to healthcare professionals and interested individuals. I absolutely love teaching Reiki!
I realized only recently how much fun it is to expand professionally into Animal Reiki - it is such a joyful experience because the animals tend to have an uncluttered mind, and there is never any doubt - you know where you stand with the animal in your life. At my own house, there are always rescued dogs and cats running around, and in the past we had hamsters, bunnies, guinea pigs, and - when I was much younger - horse and pony.
Since I learned Reiki in the nineties, all my animals received their share of Reiki. It has been so helpful especially with those rescued dogs that had issues. My cats tend to have a different outlook on Reiki - when they are healthy they only like distant Reiki, but when they are sick they can't get enough of the hands-on approach. Every animal is different, every animal has different needs, and we will address these situations in our classes and during individual instructions.
Cyrus' Story:
Cyrus came to us as a 5 year old German Shepherd/Rottweiler mix. Until he was rescued he was chained to a fence for the first five years of his life - rain or shine, summer or winter. He was fortunate that someone made it possible for him to be taken to a no-kill shelter on Bainbridge Island where we met.
Cyrus had issues! He was completely unsocialized as they had chained him to that fence while he was still a puppy. As a 5 year old dog, Cyrus did not know that you have to look where you are going when you are playing in the yard. I can't count the many times we all had to run after him to make sure he would not crash into a tree, the fence, or a bush while playing. He would focus on us, the toy he was playing with, being happy, and he'd run into obstacles. It took one long summer for him to learn. He was five years old with the knowledge of a five week old dog.
Cyrus had other issues, more serious ones: he could not handle male adults. He could not handle the smallest amount of chaos, and he could not handle being surrounded by nervous energies. His reactions? He would try to snap or bite. But Cyrus was also a love bug - he loved to spend hours cuddling with me, he loved being on my bed - in the first year the only place where he felt safe - and I always knew from the first day we met that he had not a single mean bone in his body, but that life had dealt him sone hard cards when he was just a puppy.
We created a very controlled environment for Cyrus: no excitement at our house. No nervous male adults at our house. Lots of love, understanding, adapting the environment to him, lots of highly predictable routine, lots of tuning into him at any time of the day, and - lots of Reiki. It was through the Reiki that I was able to tune into Cyrus the way it was necessary. There was no thought in my mind how Cyrus should be, there was only love and compassion for this creature, and the knowledge that we could create a connection through Reiki which helped us communicate.
Today, Cyrus is 12 years old - see his picture at the top of the page. He is a big dog, 97lbs, and he is in great shape. No physical ailments, no hip issues, he just got a clean bill of health from the vet. And Cyrus continues to be a love bug, he has adapted well to life, he is by no means as needy as he used to be when we brought him home. We no longer need to control the environment to the extent we used to do during that first year with him. He has come a long way. And he no longer runs into trees when playing.
It was the Reiki attitude, the Reiki way, and the willingness to work with what we were given which made Cyrus a success story. He is the most faithful dog, always willing to protect us and all members of the household who he considers to be in need of protection: myself, my now grown kids, the bunnies, the guinea pigs, the cats. He will stand between the guinea pig cage and a visitor if he feels the guinea pigs may need protection, and he will not move away until told that everything is okay. He has learned to trust us, and we know we can trust him.
